The new film tax incentives in Michigan created a national buzz in the past year, with Hollywood film projects receiving much of the attention. But what do the film tax incentives mean for the independent filmmaker and new media artist? Who qualifies, and what projects benefit most? This panel serves to provide an insider’s guide for independent filmmakers from several of Michigan’s experts in the field.

HOWARD HERTZ -- Mr. Hertz specializes in entertainment law and is the lead attorney of Hertz Schram’s Entertainment Practice Group. Since 1976 he has represented numerous artists and entities in the entertainment field, including authors, screenwriters, recording artists, radio personalities, producers, production companies, record labels, agents, artist managers, music publishers, songwriters and athletes. Among others, his most well-known clients have been George Clinton, Sippie Wallace, The Romantics, The Bass Brothers, Eminem, Marilyn Manson, Jack White, and Russell Simmons. Services provided to entertainment clients range from contract negotiation and litigation to entity formation and estate/tax planning.

JULIE MAY -- Ms. May has extensive experience with Michigan’s film tax credit, having worked with eight film productions in 2008, including Youth in Revolt (The Weinstein Company), Hung (HBO), Wedding Day, Butterfly Effect, Virgin on Bourbon Street, Prayers for Bobby, and Art House. She has worked with mainly independent films, ranging from $80,000 to $15 million budgets.

ETHAN BORDMAN -- Ethan Bordman is the Assistant Executive Director of the Detroit office of The American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. Ethan received his law degree from the University of Detroit School of Law and his Masters of Business Administration from Wayne State University. He continued his studies overseas earning a Master of Laws and Letters in Entertainment Law from The University of Westminster in London, England.
