SUMMARY:Mock Up On Mu
DESCRIPTION:A radical hybrid of spy\, sci-fi\, Western\, and even horror
genres\, Craig Baldwin's Mock Up On Mu cobbles together a feature-length
"collage-narrative" based on (mostly) true stories of California's post
-War sub-cultures of rocket pioneers\, alternative religions\, and Beat
 lifestyles. Pulp-serial snippets\, industrial-film imagery\, and B- (and
Z-) fiction clips are intercut with newly shot live-action material\, p
owering a playful\, allegorical trajectory through the now-mythic occult
matrix of Jack Parsons (Crowleyite founder of the Jet Propulsion Lab)\,
L.Ron Hubbard (sci-fi author turned cult-leader)\, and Marjorie Cameron
(bohemian artist and "mother of the New Age movement"). Their intertwin
ed tales spin out into a speculative farce on the militarization of spac
e\, and the corporate take-over of spiritual fulfillment and leisure-tim
 e.

SUMMARY:Remixing the Rules: Copyright & Fair Use
DESCRIPTION:Co-hosted by the A.C.E.S. of the State Bar of Michigan\n \nO
ne of the most critical and ongoing debates in the global entertainment
sector is the battle over fair use rights \nand copyright law in the art
 s. Whether embedded with music\, film\, new media or beyond\, this issue
does not just affect everyone\; it is redefining the entertainment worl
d as we know it. Join us for an animated and educational \ndiscussion on
copyright infringement\, guidelines and laws where we question if our c
urrent laws are out of date\, and whether they serve or stifle social cr
eativity. \n\nThis event is FREE to the public! \n\n CRAIG BALDWIN --
Born in Oakland California\, USA\, Craig Baldwin attended \nthe Univers
ity of California at Santa Barbara\, University of California at Davis\,
and San Francisco State University (Masters\, 1986). In the Dept. of Ci
nema there\, he studied under Bruce Conner and became increasingly drawn
to collage film form. His \ninterest in the re-contextualization of “fo
und” imagery led him to the theories of the Situationists\, and to vario
us practices of mail art\, ‘zines\, altered billboards\, and other creat

 m. \nBaldwin has received the SF Bay Guardian Goldie award\, the Phelan

-beatles\, Emergency Broadcast Network\, and the Barbie Liberation Organ
ization. \n\n MARK HOSLER -- Mark Hosler is a founding member of the
group Negativland. Since 1980 Negativland have been creating records\,
video\, radio and live performance using appropriated sound\, image and

earranges these bits and pieces to make them say things they never inten
ded to. In doing this kind of cultural opposition and “culture jamming”
(a term coined by Negativland in 1984)\, Negativland have been sued twic
e for copyright infringement and have\, since 1991\, been aggressively a
nd publicly involved \nin advocating a significant reform of this nation
’s copyright laws. As a member of Negativland\, Mark has written essays
and articles on these issues for Billboard Magazine\, Keyboard Magazine\
, College Music Journal\, NYU Law Commentator and others. He has lecture
 d at universities\, including Arizona\, \nVirginia\, Tennessee\, MIT\, Y

SUMMARY:Juror Presentation: Betzy Bromberg
DESCRIPTION: "A personal investigation of cellular memory\, a bio-metaphy
sical\nmusical." -Betzy Bromberg \n\n “Los Angeles-based experimental fi
lmmaker Betzy Bromberg returns to the screen with her latest gem\, a Dar
kness Swallowed \, a 78-minute meditation on the evanescent traces of me
mory and loss. At once her most elliptical and also her most overt work
in a career that spans nearly 30 years and more than a dozen dazzling f
ilms\, a Darkness Swallowed opens on a pair of faded photographs showing
an old dented car\, one with a child standing beside it and the other w
ithout. Speaking in voice-over\, Bromberg references a past event\, one
that will forever haunt her although it occurred before her birth. The
film then sinks downward\, dipping below the surface of the rational wo
rld to mine the seemingly infinite layers of the past stored within the
fleshy entrails\, chalky bones\, sinewy spider webs and gnarled ligament
s of both the body and the Earth… Dedicated to the filmmaker's mother\,
the film is also a gift to us\, a reminder of cinema's organic basis in
chemistry and light\, and of its ability to take us deep inside.” - Hol
 ly Willis\, LA WEEKLY

SUMMARY:The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle
DESCRIPTION:The Sex Pistols star in director Julien Temple's bizarre and
hilarious fictional documentary that charts the rise and fall of punk's
most notorious band through the eyes of its calculating manager\, Malcol
m McLaren. Mixing animation and midgets with footage of some of The Pist
ols' most electrifying live performances\, the 1980 film presents the ba
nd's success as an elaborate scam perpetrated by McLaren to make "a mill
ion pounds" at the expense of record companies\, outraged moralists\, th
e British Royal Family - and even the fans and band members themselves.\
n \nThe Great Rock Rock 'n' Roll Swindle was called "a parable of our t
imes" by the Guardian (UK)\, but most music fans simply consider it one
of the best rock films ever. More than 25 years after their breakup\, Th
e Sex Pistols' music continues to influence punk and post-punk bands the
world over. The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle shows why.

SUMMARY:Bruce Conner Retrospective 1
DESCRIPTION:The recent departure of the legendary Bruce Conner (1933-2008
)\, continues to have a profound impact of both sorrow and glory. Tribut
es and retrospectives have been held around the world to reflect on his
extraordinary life and visionary cinema. \nConner’s signature aestheti
cs have transcended beyond his name\, becoming an integral part of art a
nd film culture. A self-proclaimed thief of commercial\, political\, and
apocalyptic imagery\, Conner subverts both the medium’s iconic imagery
and its ideology. The first of two programs exhibits the thematic prog
ression of Conner’s relationship to the film medium itself\, messages em
bedded into the American subconscious\, life\, death\, and metaphysical
transformation. Preceded by: Pat Oleszko Gulliblur’s Travels: A Space
Oddity Oleszko makes a blast from the Pats into a galaxy of curious pr
oportions. In a performantz excerpt assisted by an assordid band of U of
M rock ‘n’ roilers\, logic is rapidly dis-mythed. Gulliblurr Swiftly ta

SUMMARY:RiP: A remix manifesto
DESCRIPTION: In RiP: A remix manifesto\, Web activist and filmmaker Brett
Gaylor explores issues of copyright in the information age\, mashing up
the media landscape of the 20th century and shattering the wall between
users and producers. \n The film’s central protagonist is Girl Talk\, a
mash-up musician topping the charts with his sample-based songs. But is
Girl Talk a paragon of people power or the Pied Piper of piracy? Creati
ve Commons founder\, Lawrence Lessig\, Brazil’s Minister of Culture Gilb
erto Gil and pop culture critic Cory Doctorow are also along for the rid
 e. \n A participatory media experiment\, from day one\, Brett shares his
raw footage at opensourcecinema.org\, for anyone to remix. This movie-a
s-mash-up method allows these remixes to become an integral part of the
film. With RiP: A remix manifesto\, Gaylor and Girl Talk sound an urgent
