A wonderful film, maybe the best yet from Hertzfeldt. Why didn't it win anything? Beats me -- it is funny,( indeed, often downright hilarious!) poetic and deeply moving in its contemplation of the mysteries of life and death. It's use of Wagner's "Lohengrin" is downright inspired. The title is well chosen too: while the audience laughs at the bizarre anxiety ridden mother of Bill, her feeble attempt to do her best for her son (with her "I am so proud of you" notes in his school-lunches, brought a tear to my eye. As did Bill's 'last words': "It smells like dust and moonlight." A truly special film.
